Evan Rachel Wood roars the 20's in Gucci

Actrice Evan Rachel Wood looks stunning in this chic flapper-inspired Gucci dress with matching 20's hairstyle.

I love the 20's influences in fashion. With its 2012 Spring/Summer Collection, Gucci unveiled a line that’s a throwback to the roaring 20s with a little modern rock-chic and vintage glamour mixed in. Gucci Creative Director, Frida Giannini, was inspired by the opulence and glamour of the “era of hedonism”. And with all that glittering gold, beading and tassels, the line is pure indulgent luxury.

I recentely watched the remake of Mildred Pierce and Evan Rachel Wood is great in it as the grown-up Veda Pierce.  Wood’s Veda blossoms from a precious brat into a full-blown monster, a sly seductress whose ambition and cunning are bottomless. It’s a high-wire performance, pressing up against the boundaries of Greek tragedy and campy excess, but Wood reins it in just enough to retain a sense of Veda’s twisted humanity.Excellent!

Evan Rachel Wood got her action on in this Frank Miller-directed short for Gucci.

Happy Halloween!

Halloween
(or Hallowe'en) is an annual holiday observed on October 31, which commonly includes activities such as trick-or-treating, attending costume parties, carving jack-o'-lanterns, bonfires, apple bobbing, visiting haunted attractions, playing pranks, telling scary stories, and watching horror films.

Prada Mondrian shift dress

This dress by Prada reminds me of the Mondrian dresses designed by Yves St Laurent in 1965.  Mondrian (1872-1944), a Dutch painter, was an important member of the De Stijl, who lived and worked in the Netherlands after the First World War.  This dress is reminiscent of  his earlier work of the twenties and thirties.  YSL designed a collection of mod clothing inspired by his work.

I love that Mucchia Prada opted for for the dropped-waist, straight-up-and-down silhouette of the twenties flapper—and the sixties dolly bird for the Prada Fall 2011 Ready-to-Wear collection. I hope to see many flapperdresses in the shops soon.

Giles

Giles Spring 2012 RTW
"This is so not a collection about Black Swan," Giles Deacon said backstage before his show in London. Rather, it was a panoply of interlocking, stream-of-consciousness references. The Silver Swan, the automaton from the Bowes Museum near Deacon's hometown in County Durham, led to society swans photographed by Cecil Beaton, whom the designer dubbed "the Andy Warhol of his day." Deacon was also influenced by Beaton's Symphony in Silver portrait of his sister Baba; that led him to Warhol's Factory and Silver Clouds, which cued the runway backdrop.

Solstice Scents Autumn Collection

I am a big fan of Solstice Scents perfumes. They are like a little journey to another place and time. I am always looking forward to finding out how they develope on my skin. I just can't stop sniffing my wrist when I am wearing their perfumes. They sell lots of other products as well, like houseperfume, soaps and bodybutters. Give them a try!
Image inspired by Foxcroft perfume and Gucci

The new Autumn Collection by Solstice Scents has been released.
Because they all sounded great to me, I decided to order the sample pack first. This sample pack contains all 6 of their new Autumn Collection fragrances.

The package arrived quickly. It was filled with orange and black paper decorationstrips and little pumpkins in the box. So cute!

The perfumes:

Devil's Tongue
I personally love dark scents. I tend to prefer unisex or male perfumes to sweet feminine perfumes. So Devil's Tongue is perfect for me. It is a cyphre, which means it has fresh, green notes. I get a hint of oakmoss, patchouli, bergamot and labdanum. And there is definitely leather and tobacco there. Two ingredients I love in a perfume. I think this is a great blend, the notes work wonderful with eachother and the staying power is amazing. But I have found that all Solstice Scents perfumes have great staying power.
Bravo! A keeper!

Gehenna
Love, love, love! It is dark and intrigueing. Red musk is the dominant note. And I love it. I am a big musk fan. As a teenager I only wore White Musk (haha). This red musk is much more spicy and sensual. The Dragon's Blood is sweet and spicy and yes also mysterious and sensual. This is a very sexy perfume! Oh yes and there is a hint of smoke there as well. When this perfume dries down it turns more smooth and sweet, with hints of vanilla, sandalwood and patchouli.
Another new favourite!

Manor
I am starting to sound like a broken record. But I also love this new perfume. Woods, musk, incense (!!). It is sweet but with a minty note. This must be the Oud, a ceder/menthol like smell. Very nice. The dry down is wonderfully sweet with a smokey edge to it.
Great fragrance!

Thornwood Thicket
I started off thinking this was going to be the perfume I don't like. At first sniff I thought it was way too sweet. Too many sweet berries for my liking. But it dries down into something very interesting and surprising. A woodsy and golden rich smell takes over, the berries linger in the background. Not my favourite, but very good for daywear and when in a sweeter mood. Really nice.

Witch's Cottage

My first reaction was yuk, butter and sugar!. Lots of cacao and sheabutter. But after a while I started smelling herbs, spices, smoke and woods. It is too sweet and buttery for me. It makes my stomach a bit quiesy. But I never liked the smell of cacoabutter. It smells like salty caramel boiling on an open fire. Heavy and thick. However I do like the dry down smell of it. The incense and smoke come far more to the foreground.
I cannot make my mind up about this one. This is one of those journeys, it keeps changing. Not such a fan of the first steps in, but the dry down is quite delicious.

Foxcroft
This one is so interesting. This perfume smells like Fall. It truely does.
It smells like rain on stone and damp soil, you know that particular smell of the crips autumn air.
I smell lots of ferns, wood and leaves, wet leaves. It smells like fresh air!
This perfumes embodies the feeling of things changing. An feeling of unexpected sharpness, a swift elation and a sense of sadness and departure.
The perfume slowly changes to a sweeter and more comforting scent.  There's a hint of smoke and I smell licorice and that salty caramel again, but now not as sweet as in Witch's Cottage.
Gorgeous!

Bottega Veneta Women's Fall-Winter 2011/2012

Tomas Meier's designs for the Bottega Veneta's Fall/Winter collection feature knee-length skirts, trim little cardigans, sleeveless shifts and sparkling jewelry. Exciting is that Maier used unexpected fabrics, like pilly wool or densly woven yarn. He was very adventurous with suface treatments, like tea-staining and real and virtual lace embellishments.

To quote Mr Maier: "Juxtaposing clean lines with elaborate surfaces, it aims not for balance but for a synthesis of unlike elements, with each refined piece of clothing and relaxed accessory containing within it a wealth of detail, technique, and embellishment".

Well I simply love it.

Miu Miu

Okay so this isn't from the new collection, but I so love Miu Miu's 2010 Fall collection. It is very 1960's so still very much on trend (modtrend, colour, shiftdresses).

Lost in the Haze

I love New Zeeland Fashion Blogger Jo's style!
(it is snowing there right now!)

Check out her website Lost in the Haze.

Braided hairstyles are making a strong comeback for Fall/Winter 2011-2012. One of the best things about braids is their amazing versatility and the possibility to tailor them in order to suit any occasion. Be creative and try different, innovative styles. Whether you opt for the simple braid as seen at Lanvin or Cacharel or for playful braided pigtails as spotted at Y3 or twin braids at Kenzo, it's time to start to learn plaiting for a clever, unique look.

Yesterday Lucille Ball would’ve turned 100, almost sixty years after I Love Lucy started cracking up TV viewers and never stopped. She defined the modern sitcom and paved the way for every female comedy legend who came after her.

Vivienne Westwood

I love Vivienne Westwood's designs. I love their edge and Vivienne herself ofcourse is an icon in every way.
I just had to draw THIS portrait of Vivienne Westwood!

Career highlights: In 1989, Mr. John Fairchild, president of Fairchild publications and editor of the fashion bible Women’s Wear Daily, listed Vivienne Westwood as one of the six most influential designers in the world in his book Chic Savages.

In 1990, Vivienne Westwood was awarded the prestigious title of British designer of the year.

In 2006, her contribution towards British fashion was officially recognized when she was appointed a Dame.

In 2007, Westwood was rewarded with the Outstanding Achievement in Fashion at the British Fashion Awards in London.

Vivienne Westwood is a trustee of Liberty and continues to uses the medium of her shows to talk about culture and politics, more specifically about the urgent need to act against climate change.
